My sister defended her dissertation yesterday and is now (and will forever be) a doctor. She did this with her baby in tow which is not only admirable but brave. I don't know the definition of proud so I will go and look it up.
proud (adj.) 1. feeling pleasurable satisfaction over an act, a possession, a quality, or a relationship used to measure one's stature or self-worth.
That is it.
I am proud because she is the first doctor in my family, the only one on my mother's side. Most children who have success in education, particularly at this level, often have mothers, fathers or someone who has been there and been a mentor. Nicole paved her path with her brilliance and wit. She struggled to perservere and finally can take a deep breath. A deep breath of satisfaction.
Her poetry is direct and beautifully describes the intersection of geography, nature and science.
I am honored to know her.

Wow. You made me cry. Thank you kind sister for helping me and believing in me all the way. And for taking Zoe out of the room when she started crying. I really don't think I could have done it without you. Really. Thank you. For everything.
